Things to do in Mauritius

Rated 8th in the Trip Advisor Travelers’ choice™ Islands 2015, Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, East of Africa. Renowned for its white sandy beaches and its clear blue lagoons, it’s paradise for the beach lovers and water-sports enthusiasts. Yet the island has much more to offer! Explore the 2,040 km2 to see what this treasure trove of adventures has in store for you!

CHAMAREL COLOURED EARTH

If you are heading south west, prepare yourself for the most fascinating view! A section of earth dunes of seven different colours (mostly shades of red, brown, violet, blue and purple among others) located in the small village of Chamarel. The colours have gradually unfolded through the transformation of basaltic lava (due to Mauritius volcanic origin) to soil minerals.

DIVING

Imagine dark blue sapphire sea and serenity at its peak. Dive in Mauritius and live the dream by exploring the most amazing depths of the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a special world underwater where a colourful marine life, among which rare fish species, play hide and seek in caverns, reefs, pinnacles and wrecks. Among the most renowned Mauritian dive sites are the Cathedral, situated off the western coast in Flic en Flac and the Whale Rock, an immersed crater near Ile Ronde, an unpopulated islet 22.5 km north of Mauritius.

GRAND BASSIN

Have a feel of the Mauritian multicultural traditions by visiting Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), a highly touristic and religious landmark. The crater lake is among the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites outside India. According to the legend , the sacred lake, 1800 ft above sea level is said to be sourced from the Holy Indian River Ganges. More than 400,000 believers each year head to the lake with colourful kanwars (Large decorative bamboo structures ) when Maha Shivaratree (the Night of Shiva) is celebrated.
